Late-Winter and CWD Deer Special Hunt Area Applications: Hunters may apply online from Oct. 25-Nov. 28 for site-specific permits for designated IDNR Special Hunt Areas for the Late-Winter Firearm and CWD Deer Hunts. The online application system will be available through the IDNR website at www.dnr.illinois.gov. Permits for these sites are limited and will only be available through the online application from Oct. 25-Nov. 28 (paper applications will not be available). Hunters may submit only one online Special Hunt Area application. Unfilled 2011 site-specific firearm, muzzleloader or youth permits for these sites are not valid during the Late-Winter Firearm and CWD Deer season (except at sites where standby hunting is available).
Late-Winter and CWD Deer Hunt Open Counties/Permits: Permits for Illinois counties that are open for the 2011-12 Late-Winter Firearm Deer and CWD Deer Hunting Seasons will be available over-the-counter (OTC) from Dec. 13 through the end of the seasons on Jan. 15, 2012. Wingshooting Clinics: The IDNR and participating partners are sponsoring wingshooting clinics at sites throughout Illinois this fall to help improve the shooting skills of participants. Youth/Women's clinics are designed to teach participants basic firearm and hunter safety and the fundamentals of wingshooting. Hunter clinics are designed to enhance the wingshooting skills of hunters and provide sound wingshooting practice techniques. The clinics will be conducted on weekends. Online Free Site Hunting Permits: Hunters are reminded that Free Site Hunting Permits (windshield cards) to hunt upland, forest game and waterfowl at IDNR sites are now available online from the IDNR website atwww.dnr.illinois.gov. Navigate to ‘Hunting/Trapping’ and then ‘Public Hunting Areas’ to print these permits. Hunters are encouraged to view the link to hunter fact sheets also available at the site. Watch the IDNR homepage link for new sites being added to this online service. For information or assistance, hunters should contact the site where they intend to hunt.
Controlled Pheasant Permits: Hunters can still apply for 2011-12 Illinois controlled pheasant hunting permits. Permits are available for use at 19 IDNR sites, 15 of which are operated by the IDNR, while four sites are managed by concessionaire T. Miller, Inc. For application information, check the IDNR website at www.dnr.illinois.gov orwww.tmillerinc.com.

Marseilles SFWA Hunting Schedule Adjustments: The IDNR will adjust hunting schedules at Marseilles SFWA this fall to accommodate military training operations. During October, the Marseilles SFWA site is open each Monday through Thursday in all hunt areas with these adjustments:
Oct. 6, 10, 26 and 31 – All areas open, but convoy units training along the main road
Oct. 11-13 – Areas A and C closed (Area B open)
During November, Marseilles SFWA will be open Wednesday through Sunday with these adjustments:
Nov. 2-3, Nov. 9, and Nov. 16-17 – Areas A and C closed (Area B open)
During December and January, Marseilles SFWA is open Wednesday through Sunday (closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day). The last day to hunt is Jan. 12. All deer stands must be off site by the end of the hunting day on Jan. 12.
IDNR to Host Public Meeting on Stratton Lock and Dam Winter Drawdown Operations: The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) will host a public meeting on Thurs., Oct. 20 to discuss the winter drawdown operation of the William G. Stratton Lock and Dam on the Fox River in McHenry. The public meeting will be held on Oct. 20 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Conference Center at McHenry County College, 8900 U.S. Highway 14 in Crystal Lake. Each year on Nov. 1, the IDNR begins a winter drawdown at Stratton Lock and Dam – a reduction in the water surface elevation of the Chain O’Lakes. The Chain O’Lakes is lowered from normal summer pool, a river stage at Fox Lake of 4.0 feet, to winter pool stage, which is a river stage of 2.5 feet. December 1 is the target date to reach winter pool stage. The drop in river stage allows an additional 12,600 acre-feet of flood storage in the Chain O’Lakes – additional storage that is utilized for the spring snow melt flood event and to manage flows during potential ice jams on the Fox River. The IDNR Office of Water Resources has received several requests from citizens to change the winter drawdown. The requests range from eliminating the winter drawdown to increasing the winter drawdown to a river stage at Fox Lake of 2.0 feet. A request has also been received for delaying the winter drawdown until Dec. 1. The IDNR has completed a study looking at the impacts of these suggested modifications to the winter drawdown operating plan and will review the study findings at the public meeting, with the presentation beginning at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20. Sportsman’s Raffle: Tickets are still available for the 2011 Illinois Conservation Foundation Sportsman’s Raffle with a $100,000 first-place prize. Tickets for the raffle are $100 each. Proceeds from the raffle will support youth conservation education and outdoor recreation programs at the ICF’s Torstenson Family Youth Conservation Education Center. Apply Now for ICF Conservation Achievement Scholarships: The Illinois Conservation Foundation will honor high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding efforts to preserve, protect, enhance and/or promote Illinois’ natural resources with the awarding of three Conservation Achievement Scholarships. One $5,000 scholarship, one $3,000 scholarship and one $2,000 scholarship are available. Applicants must be Illinois residents and seniors in an Illinois high school during the 2011-2012 school year. Wolf Creek Stable Concession: IDNR is seeking corporations and individuals interested in operating of a horse riding stable at Wolf Creek State Park located in Windsor. Through a Lease Agreement with IDNR, parties will lease one barn/stable for 10 horses and approximately four acres of pasture, and be authorized to provide horseback and pony rides, hay rides, buggy rides and riding lessons. The lessee will be required to provide all equipment, including horses, required for the operation of the concession. Months of operation will be April 1 to October 31, from 8 a.m. to sunset, except Mondays and Tuesdays when it will be closed. Wolf Creek State Park is located in Shelby Co., eight miles northwest of Windsor. The site encompass 11,100 acres of water, 250 miles of shoreline and large tracts of carefully maintained indigenous woodlands ideal for camping, horseback riding, snowmobiling, boat fishing, water skiing, pontoon boating, windsurfing or drifting on the glittering expanse of Lake Shelbyville. Trapping Permit Drawings: IDNR will conduct a number of drawings for trapping permits this month:
• A public drawing for the allocation of Sangchris Lake State Park trapping permits will be held at 1 p.m., Sat., Oct. 15. Registration will be at 12:30 p.m. at the site headquarters, located approximately six miles southeast of Rochester. One permit for one trapping zone will be allocated through the drawing procedure. Two names will be allowed on the permit, and only those individuals listed will be allowed to trap. All persons entering the drawing must have a current 2011 trapping license in possession. Persons whose names are drawn must be in attendance. For more information, contact Sangchris Lake State Park, 9898 Cascade Road, Rochester, IL 62563 or phone 217/498-9208 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Two trapping permits will be awarded at a public drawing to be held Mon., Oct. 24 at the site headquarters of Beaver Dam State Park, 14548 Beaver Dam Lane, Plainview, IL 62685.
Registration for the drawing will begin at 10 a.m. at the park office and the drawing will be held at 11 a.m. Trapping will be permitted in the designated areas from the statewide opening until Jan. 25, 2012, except beaver trapping which is allowed through Mar. 31, 2012. A 2010 or 2011 trapping license or trapper education card will be required to register for the drawing. For more information, contact Beaver Dam State Park at 217/854-8020.
• Six trapping permits will be awarded at a public drawing to be held Mon., Oct. 24 at the site headquarters of Horseshoe Lake State Park, 3321 Highway 111, Granite City, IL 62040. Registration for the drawing will begin at 10 a.m. at the park office and the drawing will be held at 11 a.m. Four permits will be allocated for Horseshoe Lake State Park. Trapping will be permitted at Horseshoe Lake State Park from statewide opening with the exception that during waterfowl season, live traps and land sets only will be permitted. At the close of waterfowl season, all trapping will be permitted following statewide regulations. The remaining two permits will be allocated to the satellite site Gabaret, Mosenthein and Chouteau Island Area. Statewide regulations will be in effect for this area. Beaver trapping will be allowed for all areas through Mar. 31, 2012. A 2010 or 2011 trapping license or trapper education card will be required to register for the drawing. Registration for the drawing will begin at 10 a.m. at the park office and the drawing will be held at 11 a.m. Trapping will be permitted in the designated areas from the statewide opening until Jan. 25, 2012 and land sets only are permitted. Schoolyard Habitat Grants: The IDNR Division of Education has recently received grants from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program and the U.S. EPA Environmental Education program to expand the Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant program. The grant program provides funds to establish or enhance wildlife habitat on the school grounds or other public place and is available to teachers, youth group leaders, and nature center personnel. Additional funding for this program has been provided by the Jadel Youth Fund and the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Foundation of Skokie.

Quarries and Culture: The Illinois State Museum Research and Collections Center in Springfield hosts its monthly science series program for October on “Quarries and Culture: Trade in the Southern German Neolithic” on Wed., Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. The program will be presented by Dr. Lynn Fisher, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois-Springfield.
