South Dakota: Firearms Antelope and West River Antlerless Deer Seasons Open

The South Dakota state seal.Image via WikipediaPIERRE, S.D. – Big-game hunters in South Dakota will have an opportunity to pursue both antelope and deer in western South Dakota, beginning this Saturday.

The Firearms Antelope Season will run from Oct. 1-16. In addition, individuals with an anterless license for the West River Deer Season can use that antlerless license to hunt in the designated unit during the Antelope Season dates. The regular West River Deer Season will run from Nov. 12-27 in most areas.

“In many West River counties, we are looking for hunters to harvest more antlerless deer,” said Game, Fish and Parks Region 2 Supervisor Cliff Stone. “Hunters are our main tool in managing deer populations.  Many West River counties have leftover antlerless tags.”

Those taking advantage of antlerless deer hunting during the Antelope Season must use their antlerless West River Deer tags in the units designated on the licenses. Hunters may use their antlerless West River Deer license during the Antelope Season dates whether or not they have a Firearms Antelope license.

Unsold licenses remain for both the Antelope and West River Deer seasons. Information is available online at www.gfp.sd.gov
