South Dakota GFP Conducts Helicopter Assisted White-tailed Deer Survival Study in Lake and McCook Counties

 Residents of McCook and Lake Counties had a different view in the sky earlier this month. A helicopter with trained wildlife wranglers dangled in the sky to assist with capturing 50 deer for the Department of Game, Fish and Parks’ (GFP) new doe and fawn survival study.
“Over the last few weeks, we connected with landowners in the two counties for permission to do the study on their land, and signed up over 50,000 acres for the study,” said Julie DeJong, regional wildlife manager. “The support of interested landowners has been crucial in this research project.”
A company out of California, Native Range Capture Services, was hired to assist South Dakota wildlife biologists with capturing does to study their survival, as well as the survival of their spring fawns. The helicopter crew, comprised of a pilot, a net gunner and a “mugger,” were dispatched in early March over the herd to first shoot a net at deer. Then, the mugger jumped from the helicopter onto the ground to wrestle the deer, tied its legs like a cowboy does a steer and blindfolded it to calm the animal.
 “After untangling the doe from the net, the mugger then attached a radio-collar and inserted a vaginal implant transmitter (VIT). The VIT will stay in the doe until she gives birth, and will assist researchers in locating fawns soon after birth. Each doe was given a shot of penicillin and was released on site,” DeJong said.
Both the collars and the VIT transmit a series of slow beeps which can be picked up by researchers using a GFP truck equipped with a specialized radio receiver.  The radio collars beep faster if a deer is stopped in one location for more than eight hours, DeJong said, usually indicating a death. The VIT transmitters are temperature sensitive and will speed up when they are expelled with the fawn.
Right now, the biologists track the collared does every seven to 10 days, driving around the two counties until all 50 does are found. They plan to spend a lot of time in the areas at the end of May when most fawns are born.
“The second part of the study involves capturing the fawns and attaching radio transmitters,” she said. “Radio-collared fawns will be monitored once every seven to 10 days for a year. Locating the fawns will involve spotlighting and walking searches.”
The public can assist in the research by contacting GFP if they find a fawn in the wild.
“But do not disturb, pick up or detain the fawn,” she said. “This could lead to abandonment by the mother. GFP personnel utilize specific procedures to reduce those chances of abandonment.”
Three-fourths of this project is paid for by federal matching funds that are acquired through a tax from the sale of guns and ammunition. The remaining funds are from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses in South Dakota.
“Deer are such an important resource to the people of our state; not only for hunters, but for others who just enjoy seeing deer in the wild. Knowledge of the number of does and fawns that survive from one year to the next is vital information for estimating population trends and making sound tag allocations. Hunters are encouraged to treat collared does like any other doe as we want to get a close estimate of the doe survival in McCook and Lake Counties and hunting mortality is a component of that estimate,” DeJong concluded.

Finding Public Hunting Land in Kansas

You will find a new resource for locating public land on which to hunt in Kansas.  The idea behind this resource came about as the result of my research efforts in finding public land hunting in Missouri.

The MDC had done a great job of putting together information on conservation areas, but the structure was cumbersome.  So several years ago, I essentially put together the information in a way that at least for me made more sense.  That resource has received more traffic at family-outdoors.com than any other by quite a bit.

The same idea came to me when researching public land hunting opportunities in Kansas.  The public land options in Kansas are much more limited than Missouri, so you want to know every option available and have it in a handy format.  I came to the realization that a hunter using the KDWPT site as is would miss many opportunities due to "dead links" and other structural issues.

This resource has KDWPT wildlife areas as well as federally managed properties.  It is organized in a manner where the hunter can get all his or her preliminary research done on one page. The resource is at Kansas Public Land Hunting

Wisconsin Volunteers sought to assist with deer research project

MADISON – Wisconsin wildlife researchers are seeking people interested in wildlife research to volunteer in assisting in the live capture of deer. This will be the second year for each of two Department of Natural Resources deer research efforts; a five year study of adult deer and a three year study of fawns.
Captured deer will be fitted with radio collars and ear tags in an effort to learn more about causes of death in deer and the impact of predators on deer populations. The projects are described in a short series of Wisconsin Public Television interviews.
Researchers also ask all hunters who may have shot a collared or ear-tagged deer during the recently completed nine-day gun deer hunt to please call in using the number on the collar or ear tag and report their harvest if they have not done so already. They’ll be asked a few questions about the details of their kill and asked to return the collars, which are valuable and can be reused on newly captured deer.
“This is important information for the study,” said Christopher Jacques, DNR research scientist, “as it will give biologists a more complete understanding of the number of deer killed by hunters compared to all other causes of death.”
Jacques says volunteers are vital to the success of this effort.
“Last year, our first year of this project, got off to a great start thanks to the more than 400 volunteers who donated their time and energy,” he says. “Capture season has already started and anyone from hunters to wildlife students to folks interested in wildlife management and research are welcome. We also hope to hear from landowners in the study areas who would consider giving us access to their property to set up traps.”

Deer will be captured using box traps, net traps and drop nets.
“Last season we also used a helicopter to capture deer from the air,” said Jacques. “This is a proven technique in many parts of the country. We found it to be difficult and stressful to the animals here in Wisconsin leading to higher than normal mortality for this technique. People we’ve talked to and worked with on this project are concerned with these deaths so we’ve decided to not use the helicopters this year and use ground capture techniques only in 2011-12. If ground capture is not successful we may need to consider helicopter capture in the future.”
Volunteers will work with researchers to remove deer from the traps, record basic information on sex and age, in some cases take blood and parasite samples, fit radio collars and ear tags and release them. If captured does are found to be pregnant, they will be fitted with implant transmitters that will signal when fawns are born in the spring. New born fawns will be located at the time of birth and fitted with radio collars.
Collars emit a mortality signal at the time of death so researchers can locate and attempt to determine the animal’s cause of death whether it’s from hunters, environment, disease, vehicles, predators or other causes. The information will be used to fine tune population estimating techniques.
There are two study areas. One in northwest Wisconsin in the vicinity of Winter in Sawyer County and an east central area mostly in Shawano County.
